DIY Rustic Wood Slice Sign & Silhouette Portrait Giveaway

Hi friends! I’m so happy you’re here. I have something special for you today! Not only do I have an awesome tutorial for a beautiful, rustic wood slice sign, I’m also giving away a Silhouette Portrait! Such an exciting day. First, let’s get to the sign!

joy in the ordinary pinI’ve had this sign in mind for a while now. It’s one of my favorite quotes and mantras–I think finding joy in the ordinary is so very important. So many people take for granted the little things when they could be appreciating them and getting joy out of them. So everyday I try to focus on what’s making me happy, even if it’s something little like my morning bowl of cereal. If that cereal is making me happy, then I’m thankful for it.

joy in the ordinary 4When my friends at Silhouette America sent me a Portrait machine, I was ecstatic. It meant that I could finally make the sign I had been imagining! I’ve had this wood slice for a while and I was holding out for the perfect project. And I definitely found it.

If you don’t have a Portrait, don’t worry, there are 39 chances for you to enter a Portrait giveaway at the end of this post! I know, awesome, right?! And if you don’t win the giveaway (I hope you do!) you can add it to your holiday wish list 🙂

So, what you need for this sign is a wood slice, paint in the color of your choice, a paint brush, a Silhouette Portrait, Printable Gold Foil and this file. P.S. the file also serves as a regular printable if you do not plan on getting a Portrait.

First, paint your wood slice in the color of your choice. While drying, open the file up in Silhouette Studio. Open the Trace Window and trace the entire image. Set your blade to 5 and on cutting settings, choose the “cut outer edges” option. Adhere your foil to the cutting mat and load it into the Silhouette. Send your file to the Portrait from the studio and watch the magic happen!

When it’s all done cutting, peel off the letters and place them on the sign as you want them arranged. Make sure to really press them on! Now, stand back and look at your beautiful sign!

Also, I decided to make a little sign with the remnants of the foil by placing it on a dark walnut stained piece of wood. I then trimmed the edges of the foil to the size of the wood. This sign is shown below alongside the original:

Now it’s your time to win a Portrait!! I, along with 12 other bloggers, am giving away one Silhouette Portrait thanks to our friends at Silhouette America! We are all so excited for this opportunity. Let me introduce you to the other awesome bloggers in the giveaway:

Now for the Silhouette! If you haven’t heard of one before, it’s a really awesome cutting machine that has been the source of a lot of the beautiful signs and projects floating around Pinterest and other social media sites, and the one used for the sign above! It cuts a lot of materials including card stock, fabric, heat transfer material, transparencies, paper, vellum, adhesive vinyl and magnet paper. In other words, it’s seriously awesome.

Ahhhh, I love that! I have a feeling one of those machines could get me in trouble though. I’ve seen too many ideas on Pinterest that I just know I’d try.

All these looks so gorgeous, while the wood block design is my favorite. I love the quotes and the giveaways as well. Thanks for sharing 🙂
