I love discovering new food that I’ve never heard of or never tried. When I went home to New Jersey a few weeks ago, my aunt Gay introduced me to a new appetizer that quickly became one of my favorites! These guava, cheese and olive bites are the perfect combination of salty and sweet and will surprise your taste buds in ways they’ve never been surprised before.
Prior to eating these, I had never tried guava paste* before. But now that I’ve discovered it, I’m already dreaming up so many recipes that the sweet, dried fruit would be perfect in.
This appetizer originally hails from Puerto Rico, so remind me to send those guys a “thank you” note for dreaming up such a savory combination.
I’ve always been a nibbler while cooking, making sure to test everything as I go. But I must have eaten at least seven of these bites before they even hit the table!
Please don’t be intimidated if you haven’t tried guava paste before. Most grocery stores carry it, or it’s less than $7 on Amazon* for a good amount of it.
Also, don’t shy away from the olives. The green olives are what give these their irresistible salty flavor. I even had a friend try these who said she normally doesn’t like green olives, and she absolutely loved these.
